Big Radio is a family-owned broadcast company with deep roots in the Midwest. Founded on a passion for delivering quality programming, local news, and great music, Big Radio has grown to serve communities across Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

The company’s journey began in 1996 when Scott Thompson, a local attorney, purchased WEKZ-AM and WEKZ-FM. His expansion continued in 2001 with the launch of WQLF, followed by the acquisition of WFPS and WFRL in Freeport, IL, in 2006. In 2014, Scott’s son, Ben Thompson, returned to the family business after a successful career in finance, helping drive further growth with the purchase of WWHG, WBEL, and WGEZ in Janesville and Beloit. Big Radio’s expansion continued in 2019 with the acquisition of WJVL and WCLO in Janesville.

Today, Big Radio owns and operates 10 stations throughout the region and employs 95 people. Our stations offer a diverse range of formats, from country and classic rock to talk radio and sports coverage, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Our commitment to local communities is reflected in our dedicated local news and sports department, which consists of nearly 20 professionals who provide news coverage seven days a week, 365 days a year, across all our stations. We also broadcast over 600 high school sporting events annually, highlighting the importance of local athletics and community engagement. This dedication to quality local programming sets Big Radio apart and reinforces our mission to serve, inform, and entertain our listeners.

At Big Radio, we take pride in staying true to our hometown values while embracing innovation to better serve our audience. Thank you for making us part of your daily life!
