The City of South Beloit envisions a future mixed-use development on the property along Highway 51 that used to be home to the Garden Hotel.

Last week the Illinois Appellate Court of the Fourth District upheld a lower court’s decision that allowed the City of South Beloit to demolish the condemned building and levy more than $8 million in fines against owner New Chapter Group.

The building was already torn down months ago.

City Administrator Sonya Hoppes says the City will likely own that property by the end of the year through a foreclosure suit.

Hoppes says the City is working with Beloit 200 and Hendricks Group which has plans to tear down the former Besly Products Corporation building directly to the north. That would create a larger developable complex.
