Milton’s public works committee instructs city staff to draft a more comprehensive sidewalk ordinance.
The issue came to the fore recently when residents adamantly opposed a street replacement project in a west-side neighborhood over plans to install new sidewalks. Opponents filled the council chambers during a meeting last month with the council ultimately deciding to replace the streets without putting in sidewalks.
That episode and the lack of clear rules governing the issue prompted the public works committee’s discussion about it Tuesday night.
Currently, the city requires sidewalks in new residential subdivisions, but there are no city guidelines when it comes to existing developments where sidewalks could be added.
The directive for city Public Works Director Mark Langer is to draft an ordinance for the public works panel. That body could then deliberate about the draft and decide next steps
