Beloit’s city council president expounds on the state of his city.

Kevin Leavy used part of Monday’s address to tout Beloit’s efforts to add to its housing stock.

He says in the last year, the city created eight new residential development contracts and established a TIF housing fund that provided $6 million for affordable rental housing and $363,000 for downtown upper floor housing grants.

Leavy says the city has 47 parcels under contract for new housing and that 48 housing units have already been added or are under contract to be built.

Beloit has also committed resources to addressing homelessness, including $2 million in federal funds for Family Services of Southern Wisconsin and its Next Steps Family Resilience Center. Leavy says nearly 2,300 people received federally funded homelessness services.

Aside from housing, Leavy says crime reports were down 7 percent and that crime clearance rates have been trending upward in recent years thanks to more tips reported to CrimeStoppers.
