A group of Milton residents speak out against a plan to install sidewalks in their neighborhood as part of a road construction project.
The public works department initially planned to repave and narrow four residential streets and put in sidewalks in a subdivision on the northwest side of the city.
An informational open house drew a big crowd of people who live in the subdivision with a vast majority expressing opposition to putting in sidewalks.
Reasons included not wanting to lose yard space, not wanting to remove trees and the overall cost. The project with sidewalk addition had an estimated cost of just over $1 million. Without sidewalks, the cost estimate was $585,000.
The debate continued into (Tuesday’s) common council meeting with six residents offering public comment to council members.
The final vote was 5-1 to repave the streets at the same width and not put in any sidewalk.
