The YMCA of Northern Rock County seeks to add grass field space to match a spurt in youth sports in Milton.

The city could partner with the Y as it eyes acquiring city park land next to the Parker YMCA facility off Parkview Drive.

YMCA executive director Angie Boson says Milton’s YMCA has been hearing multiple youth football and soccer groups in Milton say the community needs more field space for football and soccer.

The YMCA’s location in Milton is adjacent to dozens of new multifamily apartment units being built.

Boson says the Y is monitoring such housing developments as signs of population growth and family growth in Milton that the Y would pursue with enhanced facilities and programs.

The YMCA would add nine acres of land between the Milton YMCA and building and Highway 26. A preliminary map shows three football fields and a soccer pitch.

Boson says the land where the fields are slated is not suited for permanent buildings or residential development because it has an underground natural gas pipeline running through part of it.

The Y could acquire the land this winter and begin working on grading later this year. A timeline by the Y shows the future sports fields could be ready for use sometime in 2026.

Other changes the Y is looking at in the next few years include expansion of family programs and childcare and school aftercare.

Boson says some local residents continue to ask when Milton’s Y might build its own swimming pool. Boson says the short answer on a new YMCA pool in Milton: Not just yet.
