Outgoing Janesville City Council members will get one last crack at buying up parcels at the 250-acre, former General Motors site.

Monday is the final city council meeting before newly elected city council members are sworn in next week.

The council has dipped into closed-door sessions at several recent city council meetings to negotiate purchase of the blighted GM and JATCO sites. So far, the council has closed on only a few acres of property owned privately that sit adjacent to the main General Motors assembly plant and former JATCO haul-away yard.

The two council members departing, Michael Jackson and David Marshick, will get a voice Monday in another set of closed door talks to potentially buy up seven remaining parcels at the former GM.

The city intends to buy the property through eminent domain for the purpose of removing blight. The city aims to source federal grant funding to tackle a phased cleanup and redevelopment of parts of the former GM sites.

That includes the two main GM parcels — the 115-acre, main General Motors site and the 115-acre JATCO site. City officials have said they’ve been trying to close a gap between the city’s offer and GM site owner Commercial Development Company’s asking price.
