The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation awards the principal of Beloit’s Todd Elementary School.
Samuel Karns won one of 14 Principal Leadership Awards from the foundation for his work at Todd.
He says the school’s improvement on its state report card and innovative efforts to connect staff, students, families and the community helped him earn the recognition from the Kohl Foundation.
Karns has been principal at Todd for three years after moving here from Texas with his wife and says some of the community outreach was already underway when he arrived.
A couple of the programs Karns highlighted for the award judges were the school’s moms support group and its annual community health fair that extended to the rest of the School District of Beloit and beyond.
The award comes with a $6,000 grant to be used in his school. He says his staff will look at its campus improvement plan to determine the best way to use that grant money.
