The School District of Janesville will need more special education teachers next school year.

Director of Human Resources Scott Garner says that over the last five years, total enrollment in the district is down about 200 students but special education enrollment is up by about the same number.

Given the trend, Garner projects the district will need eight more teachers to fulfill special education staffing levels required under state law.

The 2025-26 staffing plan presented to the school board’s Personnel, Policy and Curriculum Committee on Monday night also includes three fewer elementary school positions, one fewer high school position, about 2½ more middle school positions and one more English learner position.

Overall, the district plans to add a little more than five full-time positions at a cost of roughly $90,000 per position.

The full school board is set to consider the plan at its meeting Tuesday night.
