We have not seen a big number of public electric vehicle chargers built so far in Janesville, but now, a 16-stall EV station is coming to town.

On Monday, Janesville’s plan commission OK’d what will be the city’s largest electric vehicle charging station at 2801 Morse St. That is just east of the Janesville Menard’s, near Milton Avenue’s-Interstate 39/90 interchange.

The EV chargers’ developer, IONNA, is a company from Durham, North Carolina. An IONNA spokesman who called himself Andres told the plan commission Monday that the Janesville EV station will run 24 hours a day. It is one of seven stations IONNA is launching this year throughout the U.S.

Plan Commission member Paul Williams pointed out the charging station would have no attendant. He asked about possible emergencies at the station, including car-battery fires.

IONNA says it would would put fire extinguishers on site. City Planner Trae Meyer says IONNA must still get designs for a weather awning OK’d, so if there are any possible fire safety issues, the city an IONNA could discuss them then.

A design for one of IONNA’s EV stations shows a building attached that looks like a small convenience store. But city planners say IONNA’s Janesville charging station would have only a charger and a weather awning.
