Wisconsin’s Democratic U.S. senator reacts to announced staffing cuts in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin is on the Senate Appropriations Committee and the ranking member of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee.

She says in a statement Thursday that President Donald Trump and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s proposal to ax thousands of department employees would endanger people’s health to make room in the federal budget for “billionaire tax breaks.”

Baldwin says federal workers on the chopping block include those who ensure food and drug safety, support people on Medicare and Medicaid, protect communities from the spread of infectious disease, and research cures for cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
