A Beloit couple who locked five young children in a room covered in feces for up to 18 hours a day won’t spend any time behind bars.

According to online court records, 26-yar-old Crystal Polhill plead guilty to one count of neglecting a child under six and guilty to two counts of neglecting a child in December. She was sentenced by Rock County Judge John Wood to two years of probation as part of a felony hold-open agreement.

28-year-old Alexander Last plead guilty Wednesday to two counts of neglecting a child under six. He was sentenced to four years of probation.

According to the criminal complaint, Beloit Police were dispatched to a residence on the 1900 block of Nelson Avenue in June of 2024 to conduct a welfare check on some children.

Officers could smell the children’s room from 20 feet away. It had a padlock on the outside of the door. Inside officers found a single, fecal-stained mattress on the floor, along with fecal matter smeared on the walls and all of the toys. There was a single bucket for the kids to use the bathroom.
