Local authorities warn residents that scam callers are posing as police.

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are identifying themselves as active deputies or supervisors and demanding money to clear up a legal matter.

They also set up their voicemail inboxes to continue the ruse in case targeted people try to call back.

The sheriff’s office says its legitimate employees will not call residents to ask for payments. Anyone receiving such a call should report it to the Rock County Communications Center at 608-757-2244.

The sheriff’s office says it is not aware of any monetary loss to the public during the most recent wave of these scam calls.
