Milton’s police officers will soon have new radio equipment to keep them connected.

The police department received a grant from the state’s Office of Emergency Communications in the Department of Military Affairs to cover 80 percent of the cost of 18 new radio units. Chief Brandon Sachse says the current radios are 15 years old.

The total cost is $60,690, so with the grant, the city will pay just a little more than $12,000. Sachse says the city was planning on acquiring a few new units at a time over the course of a handful of years, but the grant allows them to replace everything all at once.

Sachse says the hope is for more reliable radio coverage within the city; better communication with other agencies when needed; and fewer component repairs like battery, antenna or microphone replacements.

The chief estimates the new radios will be in use in late spring or early summer.
