Janesville school officials will have their eyes on the dimming economic picture as they take control of more than $150 million they’ll spend on facilities projects in the coming years.
At a school board meeting and in an appearance on WCLO’s “Your Talk Show” last week, Superintendent Mark Holzman invoked the T-word — tariffs.
Import duties could lead to higher prices on building materials like lumber and steel. District Chief Financial Officer Dan McCrea says if actual costs outpace estimates, that could affect the scope of construction.
McCrea says generally speaking, the district produces conservative estimates to account for any contingencies that might arise.
For now, time is on the district’s side. McCrea says the procurement process for the first group of referendum projects to get underway in summer 2026 is still several months off, and as we’ve seen, the environment as it pertains to tariffs can change quickly.
