A Brooklyn woman is formally charged after a crash on Highway 14 in the town of Union last month left her 4-year-old passenger with severe injuries.

Prosecutors say Annalyse Schneeberger-Barbieur, 21, had the child in the back seat of a Honda Accord secured only with a lap belt on Feb. 16 when she lost control of the vehicle over a patch of ice.

Her car veered into oncoming traffic and was hit by another vehicle.

Both Schneeberger-Barbieur and the child were taken to a Janesville hospital, where medical staff said the child’s injuries weren’t survivable and that they wouldn’t have been as severe had they been riding in a car seat.

Schneeberger-Barbieur told police a friend had the car seat that the child usually rides in.

The day after the crash, police went to UW Children’s Hospital, where the child was flown for surgery. Nursing staff said they weren’t sure if the child would survive but that if they did, they would suffer from permanent medical issues.

The charges filed Wednesday against Schneeberger-Barbieur suggest the child is still alive. They include neglecting a child and driving without a valid license, both causing great bodily harm, and second-degree reckless injury.
