A jury in Winnebago County, Illinois, finds a Janesville man guilty of attempted homicide.
Meovonte Cooper, 22, was accused of shooting a man in Machesney Park last August. His trial ended Friday with a guilty verdict. He was also found guilty of aggravated battery with a firearm.
Citing court documents, WIFR-TV in Rockford reports Cooper climbed onto the roof of a car to access a second-floor apartment balcony in the 1000 block of Minns Drive and then shot the sleeping victim through a window.
Police were patrolling in the area at the time of the shooting and stopped Cooper as he was trying to leave in his car.
Cooper will serve at least 20 years in prison with a maximum possible sentence of 30 years.
Sentencing is scheduled for May 16.
