Mercyhealth gets permission from another municipality to exceed the maximum allowable square foot of signage on one of its properties.

Last week the Beloit Plan Commission approved an exception to sign code to allow Mercyhealth 156 more square feet of sign than code allows for it’s new emergency room opening up next door to Beloit Memorial Hospital on Prairie Avenue.

It’s a decision that Beloit Health System opposed, citing concerns over causing patient confusion, as the two facilities do not provide the same level of care.

Beloit Health System maintains that patients with life threatening conditions like heart attacks, who go to the Mercyhealth emergency room will need to be transported to another hospital, delaying life-saving care.

In 2022 Mercyhealth brought forth a proposal for a 58-foot tall, 1000 square foot monument sign for it’s Deerfield Drive clinic in response to the Interstate expansion project. The City of Janesville denied that request but eventually compromised with Mercy on a 44-foot tall pylon-style sign.
