South Beloit man who crashed 64′ Impala into crowd sentenced to probation

The 38-year-old South Beloit man accused of speeding through a barricade during Beloit’s 4th of July fireworks, nearly injuring several children, takes a plea deal in Rock County Court.

According to online court records, Anthony Benson plead no contest Friday to misdemeanor negligent operation of a motor vehicle. He was originally charged with felony first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Rock County Judge Jeffrey Kuglitsch ordered Benson to serve a year of probation.

According to the criminal complaint, Benson was driving a 1964 Impala when he struck a barricade at Eclipse Center Street and Eclipse Boulevard.

The barricade flew into a child who miraculously, wasn’t injured. Witnesses on scene detained Benson until Beloit Police arrived.

Beloit Police say Benson admitted to having a lot to drink that night, and refused to submit to field sobriety testing. He also admitted to having a shotgun in the vehicle.
