Rock County will be offering residents free home radon test kits.
Health department representatives will distribute kits while supplies last at Hedberg Public Library in Janesville on Thursday, Feb. 20; Beloit Public Library on Tuesday, Feb. 25; and Clinton Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 27.
Distribution hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. at each location. Test kits can also be collected at the Rock County Public Health Department offices at 3328 Highway 51 in Janesville.
Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally from our local geology. About half of homes tested in Rock County have had radon levels above the health advisory level.
The gas can enter homes through cracks in concrete floors and walls. At high levels over a long period of time, radon exposure can lead to lung tissue damage and cancer.
The county recommends all homes be tested for radon.
