An ad hoc finance and budget committee weighs in on Beloit’s upcoming school referendum.
At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, committee chair Carol Fox said the panel supports the operational referendum question.
Committee members studied the district’s finances last fall as part of its mission to identify cuts needed to balance the budget at that time.
She also ran down a list of priorities the committee says need to be addressed to convince people to vote for the referendum.
Fox says the district needs to effectively communicate the financial strain it has been under in recent years, the extent of cuts that have already been made and the consequences of the referendum not passing.
The committee says the district also needs to set specific and measurable goals for the referendum funding and to highlight district successes it says often go ignored in the ongoing public debate around Beloit’s referendum requests.
Goals the committee offered include enhancing learning environments, reducing staff turnover and increasing staff salaries.
