Settlement money from Clean Air Act violations will help Janesville and Beloit update their bus fleets.
Janesville will receive $580,000 from the state Department of Administration for a new bus. Beloit is getting $920,000 for one bus.
JTS Director Rebecca Smith says the new bus will replace the last one in the fleet that is from circa 2006. She says the rest of Janesville’s buses are from circa 2019 and shouldn’t need replacing for several more years. It could take up to 18 months before the new bus hits the streets, Smith says.
The local awards are part of $11.8 million in awards across the state announced Monday.
The funding is the result of a court settlement between Volkswagen and the federal government after the carmaker used software to cheat on emissions tests under the Clean Air Act.
