The city of Milton and the state will work on a solution for the intersection of John Paul Road and Madison Avenue.
Milton’s Common Council on Tuesday night approved a state/municipal financial agreement to start talks with the state on reconfiguring the intersection.
Some residents at the meeting opposed the Department of Transportation’s preference to put in a compact urban roundabout.
DOT representative Chris Wells says there will be public input sessions as the design process unfolds over the next several years. The target date to finish the reconfiguration is 2030.
The state gets a say in changes at the intersection because Madison Avenue carries Highway 59 through Milton.
During a five-year analysis period, the intersection was the scene of 21 crashes, including 10 that caused injury. The DOT says the roundabout would have mitigated 20 of the 21 collisions, including all 10 of the injury crashes.
In other action Tuesday night, the council donated a parcel of land to the YMCA of Northern Rock County for athletic fields and enacted a policy overseeing staff usage of generative artificial intelligence technology.
