U.S. Rep. Bryan Steil’s office responds to questions about Elon Musk’s actions within the federal government.
Asked if it’s appropriate for Musk to have access to systems that direct trillions of dollars of payments made by the federal government, Steil said in a statement only that he “look(s) forward to reviewing cost-saving proposals to deliver results for Wisconsin families.”
Meanwhile, Musk and the Trump administration are skipping the “proposals” phase and implementing sweeping changes at the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has delivered humanitarian aid overseas since 1961.
The legality of Musk’s actions has been called into question. USAID’s operations are funded annually by Congress, and critics argue an act of Congress is required to alter or kill the agency.
Musk is the world’s richest man and is unelected and not confirmed by the Senate to head any governmental department.
Steil, the First District representative from Janesville, did not address a question about whether he was concerned about data security as Musk gains access to federal agencies and computer systems.
