The Beloit-based Roy Chapman Andrews Society honors a UW-Madison paleoanthropologist.

The society is dedicated to promoting the life of Beloit-born explorer Roy Chapman Andrews, who became the director of the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Since 2003, the society has given out a Distinguished Explorer Award to explorers and scientists for discoveries that offer insights into poorly known subject areas.

This year’s winner, announced Friday, is Dr. John Hawks, the chair of UW-Madison’s Department of Anthropology. Hawks is an expert on human evolution and genetics. A team he led in South Africa discovered a new hominid species in 2013.

He is coauthor of two books and has published more than 100 scientific articles. His work has been featured in documentaries and other media.

An award presentation ceremony and acceptance lecture will be held at Beloit College at 4:30 p.m. April 11.
