Janesville’s Ann Roe is holding out hope for bipartisan progress in Madison.
Roe, the first-term Democratic Assembly representative for the 44th District, says she wants to keep open channels for dialog with Republican lawmakers.
Signs that the sides can reach compromise are few despite a smaller Republican majority this session.
A set of bills Democratic lawmakers say would ease the cost of living for residents garnered little support from the GOP.
Meanwhile, two Republican-led measures, one to place a ballot measure to ask state voters to enshrine a voter ID requirement in the state Constitution and another to set the legislative calendar, got little backing from Democrats.
Roe voted no on both those items, saying the calendar doesn’t provide enough floor periods to address what voters want lawmakers to address and that Wisconsin already has secure elections and one of the toughest voter ID laws in the country.
