Janesville’s Center Avenue corridor could have two street tear-ups coming this year.

City traffic engineer Ahna Bizjak says the state Department of Transportation aims to replace a section of street surface near the Center Avenue bridge in 2026.

But it might tackle some repairs to the nearby Center Avenue train underpass at Delavan Drive later this year. Full replacement of the underpass is slated in 2029.

The other major tear-up on Center Avenue this year: a full re-do of the Five Points intersection near downtown. It spells full closure to the Five Points.

But stay calm. Whether it runs this year or next, the train tunnel repair near Delavan Drive can roll out with one lane of Center Avenue remaining open.

Bizjak says the state aims to wrap up Five Points work in August. Repairs to the train tunnel won’t roll until later this year at the earliest.

The train tunnel repairs got pulled aside from Center Avenue work last year in part because Union Pacific Railroad was working to get plans OK’d.
