A Beloit woman wins her public records case against the School District of Beloit.

According to her attorney, MaryAnn Sveom filed a records request with the school district for a batch of email addresses the district sent notices to promoting its referendum effort in 2023.

That request followed a similar one in the Mequon-Thiensville School District in which the email addresses were ordered released.

Sveom’s attorney says Judge Jeffrey Kuglitsch said it was troublesome for the district to send one-sided messages using taxpayer funding while denying the public access to the same audience.

In court on Thursday, Kuglitsch ordered the school district to turn over the requested records within 14 days and to pay Sveom’s attorney fees, court costs and $100 in statutory damages.

The School District of Beloit is soon to launch another referendum campaign for a vote to be held in April.
