A local Democratic lawmaker authors a bill that is part of a package his party says will reduce the cost of living for working families.
State Sen. Mark Spreitzer of Beloit — whose district covers most of Rock County, including Janesville and Milton — was the lead author of a measure that would expand the state’s Homestead Tax Credit.
Spreitzer says the credit helps people with low or fixed incomes stay in their homes but that the amount of the credit hasn’t gone up since 2010.
Democratic leaders say the other bills in the package would provide free breakfast and lunch for all public school students and cap the cost of insulin for state residents.
Assembly Democratic Minority Leader Greta Neubauer says her caucus hopes to find more Republicans willing to work with them this session with more competitive legislative district maps in effect.
