Professionals from Eppstein Uhen Architects are already sizing up a few Janesville school buildings for construction projects.

It’s the first step in the first phase of bringing referendum renovations to all of the school district’s buildings over the next four-plus years.

Tory Schulz from EUA and Mike Johnson from JP Cullen briefed the school board on the process during Tuesday night’s school board meeting.

EUA has been on site at Jefferson and Wilson elementary schools and the downtown Education Services Center and will continue design work through next June. Starting in July, the firm will turn its focus to Lincoln Elementary and Craig and Parker high schools to wrap up planning for the first of three bid packages.

When construction documents for those schools are finished at the end of 2025, JP Cullen will start building and EUA will restart its design process for the schools in bid package No. 2.

As the planning process unfolds, Johnson says his company hopes to work more closely with school staffers.

He says the contractor is trying to respond to feedback it has received about engaging more with staff in the individual schools.

Johnson told the school board that doing so could help with scheduling and setting expectations around when and how work will unfold.

Three waves of construction projects funded by last November’s capital referendum question are expected to roll out through August 2029.
